Hi

I have just bought an ELMSCAN 5 but cannot install the USB drivers on two laptops with Win 98 first edition.   It all works fine on another laptop running XP but I would prefer to use an old laptop in case it gets damaged.

Do I need to update to Win 98 SE ?   Because the laptops are so old they are not man enough to run XP.

Any ideas?

First thing to try is using the latest version of the drivers for Windows 98. You can get them here:
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Even on that site, it has the same driver for Windows 98-ME. The next big update from 98 is Windows 2000. If you still couldn't get the drivers to work, I think that Windows 2000 would be the oldest version that would have a chance to work. I had an old laptop (200 MHz) that ran Windows 2000 just fine, but I don't know just how slow your laptops are.

I believe that the driver is not compatible with the windows that you are intending on using. In fact, if there are no drivers that could support windows 98, I would suggest you to upgrade to window XP as it would be a lot easier to solve your problem. Windows 98 is a bit old and there are quite a number of things that it could not support. Try the options out, if you can’t get it to work, jump to XP then.
