Ford F150 misfire

Hello another Newbie here.

I am having a misfire event on my 2001 Ford F150.  I went through this last year and had to wait until it got so bad to finally throw a code.  After this is was easy to fix, new COP.  Here I am a year later and the Ford has started to intermittantly misfire again.  I am the type that would rather purchase a software package than take it to the dealer for analysis and put the money in his package.  However, after reading for hours on this forum it is not clear to me if the ScanXL software with enhance Ford Diagnostics will help.  Can anyone guide me before I lay down the dough?

ScanXL with the Ford enhanced diagnostics add-on offers numerous engine misfire parameters. Please download the software and select your vehicle and then go to the PID Config tab to see a complete listing.

i have a 2001 f150 i have a missfire only on drivers side have  loud popping cracking sound threw exhaust put on computer had num 6 coil packed out replaced still no better ran 2nd test tested ok  new plugs new fuel filter can any one help!!!!!!

I'm having this issue with a 2001 F150 5.4 liter V8. I purchased scanxl and the ford add on, and it will not read ford cyl misfires. Is this ability lacking in my vehicle or is it a problem with scanxl ford add on?
